Your West Deptford pooper scooper
West Deptford sits between two creeks and a river: Big Timber Creek to the north, Mantua Creek to the south and the Delaware along its western edge, with Philadelphia across the water. It's a township of about 22,000 people, a few miles from Pitman, on our Gloucester County routes alongside Woodbury, Westville and Deptford.
West Deptford doesn't have a public dog park, so local dogs live their best lives in the backyard and on leashed walks at West Deptford Park and RiverWinds. Your scooper texts on the way, walks the whole yard, double-bags every pile into your trash can and latches the gate, so the yard stays ready for them.
Out and about
Parks, trails and dog runs in and around town, from the town's and county's own pages.
West Deptford Park (Metropolitan Avenue) and RiverWinds
No public dog park, but leashed dogs (6 feet or less) are welcome in township parks except posted areas, and owners clean up. West Deptford Park covers 86.5 acres.
353 Chapel Heights Road, Sewell
The nearest fenced town dog park that takes non-residents, in neighboring Washington Township: $20 a year with proof of a dog license.
2401 High Hill Road, Logan Township
A 2.5-acre county dog park with two fenced sections, gazebos, a water fountain and waste stations.
Good neighbors
Anyone in charge of a dog must immediately remove its waste from sidewalks, parks, public property and other people's property, and dispose of it in a sealed, leakproof container (Code §82-14D). Fines are $10, then $20, then $50.
On streets and in public places, a dog must be with someone over 12, on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
Leashed dogs only, owners clean up, and dogs stay out of areas posted "Domestic Animals Prohibited" (Code §118-2).
Dogs over six months need a license ($10 spayed or neutered, $16 otherwise), renewed every January, and the township holds a free rabies clinic every spring. Gloucester County parks, including Red Bank Battlefield, don't allow pets.
West Deptford drains to the Delaware through Woodbury Creek, Big Timber Creek and, on the south side, Mantua Creek. On the state's 2014 impaired-waters list, lower Mantua Creek was listed for E. coli, and the township's own 2018 environmental inventory names animal waste, including from pets, as a source of fecal bacteria. West Deptford's fines are among the lowest around, starting at $10, but the creeks don't care about the fine. A weekly scoop keeps it out of them.
