A Love Letter to My Dog, Cedar

Every February, I’m surrounded by messages encouraging me to give a gift of love to that one special somebody in my life. And yes, that’s my dog, Cedar! Of course, there are heart-shaped dog toys and treats I could get for him this year. But I’m wondering: What if I were to sit down and write a love letter to him instead? All I have to do is think about Cedar and I feel calmer, happier, even safer. He is my family, my “forever puppy” and it’s about time I really sat down at this keyboard to put into words the deep love that exists between Cedar (aka Beanie) and I. So, here I go!

Dear, beloved, silly, sweet Cedar:

In an unpredictable world, Cedar, you are my constant source of companionship. Practicing mindfulness and gratitude comes so much easier to me when I’m caring for you or spending time with you. Your unwavering presence, whether in moments of triumph or despair, is a steady anchor that grounds me in the beauty of the present moment.

Whether it's a brisk morning walk or an energetic play session, you inspire me to stay active. Your enthusiasm for life is a catalyst for my own physical well-being, helping me foster a healthier lifestyle. Caring for you wakes up my feelings of empathy and responsibility that might otherwise be hard for me to reach. You teach me to love myself and think about others, too, reminding me to live compassionately, even beyond the boundaries of our home.

You master the art of play effortlessly! I love when you’re ready to play after dinnertime and bring your favorite toy for tug and fetch. You remind me to embrace the simple pleasures, be present and to rediscover the childlike wonder that I often bury in my other adult responsibilities. You are the master of joyful surprises, sprinkling my life with unexpected moments of delight. From playful antics to spontaneous cuddles, you bring a constant stream of happiness that transforms routine into a celebration of shared joy.

You have a language that transcends the simple words I speak to you every day. Through gentle nudges, expressive eyes, and content sighs, you communicate profound feelings of love, understanding, and companionship, fostering a silent but profound connection. I love when you “bow” hello to me even when I’ve just come in from the other room. And when you jump up from your bow to give me kisses, I could die happy.

The simple act of petting you has therapeutic benefits – quite honestly, you make me feel better when I’m having a bad day and just don’t feel like showing up and trying.  The warmth of your fur, the rhythmic beat of your heart – I know these tactile sensations release oxytocin, physically infusing calm and connection that transcends verbal communication. But, beyond simple chemistry, I know that we understand each other deeply. When I say, “I love you, Cedar,” I know that you feel that love.

In short, I love you so much, Cedar Beanie.

My love story with you unfolds every day in countless silly, loving ways, and I’m glad I’m taking time now to write just some of them down, before your muzzle grows gray. Beyond just the warm fur and playful antics is a connection that goes to the very core of our daily lives. In every cuddle, we’ve found a love that makes our life whole and happy.

Love,

Mama

P.S. Why not write your own love story to your pet? I know you share a similar, but entirely unique, relationship with your own pet, too. Why not call your own pet over now, grab a pen and write your own love letter to them? It would be a gift to both of you, for your very own Valentine’s Day celebration.
